Only a Breath Apart by Katie McGarry
The publisher kindly sent me a digital copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Bestselling author Katie McGarryโs trademark wrong-side-of-the-tracks romance is given a new twist in the gritty YA contemporary novel, Only a Breath Apart.
Jesse Lachlin is cursed.
So the town folklore says, but while Jesseโs had his fair share of tragedy, the only curse he believes is in his grandmotherโs will: in order to inherit his family farm he must win the approval of his childhood best friend, the girl he froze out his freshman year, Scarlett Copeland.
Scarlett Copeland is psychic.
Glory Gardner tells Scarlett she has hidden psychic abilities, but Scarlett thinks Glory is delusional. What is real is Scarlettโs fatherโs irrational fears, controlling attitude, and the dark secrets at home. Scarlett may have a way to escape, but thereโs a hitch: sheโll have to rely on the one person she used to trust, the same boy who broke her heart, Jesse Lachlin.
Each midnight meeting pushes Jesse and Scarlett to confront their secrets and their feelings for each other. But as love blooms, the curse rears its ugly head …
Only a Breath Apart Review
This is my second time reading a Katie McGarry book. While I enjoyed the first one more, this one is still good.
Only a Breath Apart follows two childhood friends, Scarlett and Jesse. They’re both able to rekindle their friendship because of difficult moments in each of their lives. The book is definitely about acceptance, friendship as well as loyalty.
The characters in this book draw you in. Both Scarlett and Jesse are broken and struggling with their lives. But they end up finding strength and bravery through each other. It’s an interesting journey for both of them, but I enjoyed it.
The story itself is really heartwrenching. It certainly has some darkness to it, especially with the inclusion of abuse and it’s many forms. I did find it to be difficult to read at times. But I think it also demonstrates the realness of the story. One that I really wish wasn’t so real for many people.
One part I didn’t really enjoy in this book is the ‘curse’. I can understand a character making certain decisions because they think they’re cursed. But it just takes over the plot in my opinion, and isn’t something I particularly enjoyed.
Overall, I think Only a Breath Apart was worth the read. It’s a darker book, so I do recommend going into it with caution. I would recommend Walk the Edge more though.

Failure and success isn’t an all-or-nothing. It’s a little bit of both and everything in between.
