         Review

         This is my second time reading a Katie McGarry book and once again, I’m happy with her writing style and story.

         Only a Breath Apart follows Scarlett and Jesse. Scarlett lives in a dark world and struggles to shield herself and her story from the world. Due to his attachment to his family farm, Jesse desperately wants to keep it. With each passing day, these two childhood friends grow closer. Through a rekindling of a child relationship, they both learn the importance of acceptance and loyalty.

         Only a Breath Apart is a very interesting story. It’s heartbreaking and heartwrenching. It’s filled with heartache. It highlights the importance of bravery and strength. In accepting yourself, building confidence and standing up for what you believe in.

         These characters definitely draw you in. Both Scarlett and Jesse are broken. They’re struggling with the curves that life throws at them. But they end up finding their strength and their bravery through each other. It is an interesting journey throughout the book and one that I enjoyed. While certainly sad, I still think it is an important story to read.

         I tend to stray away from ‘dark’ storylines. The inclusion of abuse (whether emotional, physical, mental or verbal) is incredibly disturbing at times. But this also demonstrates the realness of this story. One that I wish was not real for so many people.

         I must admit, my only issue with this book is the focus on the “curse.” It just seemed to be such a focus of this book and somewhat annoying to me. It’s understandable that believing you’re cursed might drive you to make certain decisions, but it doesn’t need to overtake the entire plot (at least in my opinion).

         While I enjoyed Walk the Edge by Katie McGarry more than this one, I still enjoyed it overall.
