After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.
Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king’s council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she’ll serve the kingdom for four years and then be granted her freedom. Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilarating. But she’s bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her … but it’s the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.
Then one of the other contestants turns up dead … quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.
Throne of Glass Review
After hearing about Sarah J Maas for a while, I figured it was time to finally read one of her books! I’m so glad I did, because her books are totally addicting!
Throne of Glass follows Celaena Sardothien who is removed from the salt mines and taken to the castle. She discovers that the Crown Prince has chosen her as his champion in a new competition. If she wins, she’ll become the King’s personal assassin.
I absolutely love Celaena. She’s a flawed, arrogant, stand-offish, defensive and brave heroine. But I seriously love her. She’s able to switch between warmth and sweetness to her assassin self so quickly that it makes for some interesting moments.
And where do I start with Dorian and Chaol!! I seriously love them both equally – I just can’t choose who to like more. They both have such intriguing aspects to their personality that draw you in. Chaol is definitely argumentative, defensive and guarded. But I find those qualities fit with Celaena’s personality so perfectly.
On the other hand, Dorian is super sweet and kind. It’s almost like he brings these qualities out in Celaena. He’s everything that is the opposite of his father, which is interesting to see. I can’t wait to see how he progresses in the next book.
The plot of this book is absolutely fantastic. It’s full of action, adventure and suspense. And I think that Sarah J. Maas’ writing is spectacular. It honestly makes this book something special. I’m really looking foward to reading more of her work soon!
Overall, Throne of Glass is literally everything I expected it to be, and more. I can totally see the hype and why so many people love Sarah J. Maas.
If you’re looking for an action-packed fantasty with a strong female character this book is certainly for you. I’m really looking forward to picking up Crown of Midnight sometime soon! I can’t wait to catch up on this entire series.
