Sparks are igniting.
Flames are spreading.
And the Capital wants revenge.
Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games. She and fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark are miraculously still alive. Katniss should be relieved, happy even. Yet nothing is the way Katniss wishes it to be. Gale holds her at an icy distance. Peeta has turned his back on her completely. And there are whispers of a rebellion against the Capitol — a rebellion that Katniss and Peeta may have helped create.
Much to her shock, Katniss has fueled an unrest that she’s afraid she cannot stop. And what scares her even more is that she’s not entirely convinced she should try. As time draws near for Katniss and Peeta to visit the districts on the Capitol’s cruel Victory Tour, the stakes are higher than ever. If they can’t prove, without a shadow of a doubt, that they are lost in their love for each other, the consequences will be horrifying. Katniss is about to be tested as never before.
Catching Fire Review
In anticipation of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, I decided to re-read The Hunger Games trilogy. I really loved Catching Fire the first time around and I’m happy to say, I loved it even more this time.
Catching Fire picks up after the events of the first book, The Hunger Games. The series follows Katniss Everdeen, who lives in a dystopian world and volunteers as tribute for the annual Hunger Games.
The characters are just as enjoyable in this sequel, but more flushed out. It’s interesting to see the impact of the first games on their personal lives as well as their relationship with each other. I also love getting more of Katniss’ bold personality in this book. She’s such a great character.
One of the main reasons as to why I love The Hunger Games is the game aspect. While the theme is a little bit tragic and upsetting, it’s still an interesting concept. The game provides so much action for this series, which I really love.
Because Catching Fire includes the Quarter Quell, I love that we still get the game aspect in this book. There’s action which is great, but there’s also new opportunities for trust in this book. Trust is incredibly difficult for Katniss, so it’s great to see her growth in this book.
Because of the new characters, Katniss and Peeta have to put their trust in the hands of new people, all while competing in a deadly game. It’s a total page turner and really leaves you loving these new characters, especially Finnick!
I’m certainly excited for the final book, Mockingjay. While I’ve read it before, there’s so much I’ve forgotten. I’m excited to dive back in!
Overall, I highly recommend this series in general. Catching Fire is an excellent sequel that brings even more adventure, action and political intrigue to the table.
