Amy Curry is not looking forward to her summer. Her mother decided to move across the country and now it’s Amy’s responsibility to get their car from California to Connecticut. The only problem is, since her father died in a car accident, she isn’t ready to get behind the wheel.
Enter Roger. An old family friend, he also has to make the cross-country trip – and has plenty of baggage of his own. The road home may be unfamiliar – especially with their friendship venturing into uncharted territory – but together, Amy and Roger will figure out how to map their way.
Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour Review
At the beginning of June, Morgan Matson visited Toronto to promote her newest book Save the Date. Afterwards, I quickly jumped into reading Morgan Matson’s backlist!
Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour follows Amy as she takes her mother’s car from California to Connecticut. Since her father died in a car accident, she enlists her family friend Roger to drive with her.
I really enjoyed Amy as a main character. Her character is cautious, stubborn and also guarded. But as the novel progresses, she comes out of her shell and really starts to enjoy what life has to offer. It’s great seeing her take advantage of new opportunities.
I definitely think Roger has a big impact on the development of Amy’s character. I thoroughly enjoyed their witty banter with one another! Roger is really interesting as a character because he’s social and personable yet also reserved. I think as characters, they really balance each other!
Another aspect I enjoyed in this book is the plot. It’s so fun that the characters are taking a road trip across the country. Morgan Matson actually took a road trip to help guide the story and I think it really adds to the overall enjoyment of the book.
Throughout the book, Morgan Matson includes pictures, graphics and doodles. I really feel as though these graphics help the reader to feel like they’re actually on the road trip with Amy and Roger. It’s such a fun addition that really adds to the book.
The pace of this book is really enjoyable. It’s the perfect pace not only for a contemporary book but a road trip. I love the characters they meet in between and how their personal storylines unravel through each of the locations they visit.
Overall, Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour is a solid debut novel from Morgan Matson. I highly recommend this contemporary romance for fans of Morgan Matson. It’s also perfect for fans of Sarah Dessen!
