The publisher kindly sent me a physical copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isnβt just a game β itβs a way of life.
The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down Warcross players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. To make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships β only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.
Convinced sheβs going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the gameβs creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this yearβs tournament in order to uncover a security problem … and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emikaβs whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that sheβs only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.
Warcross Review
Even though this book was sitting on my shelf for the longest time, it’s certainly worth the read.
Warcross tells the story of Emika Chen, who accidentally hacks into the opening ceremony of the world famous Warcross championship. Because of this, she’s quickly swept away to Tokyo to work for Hideo Tanaka, the Warcross creator and spy during the games.
Emika is a fantastic main character. She is full of talent, drive and desire but sometimes struggles to make ends meet. Emika is a really relatable main character. While luck is not always on her side, she is able to perservere.
I also really enjoyed the other characters in this book. Especially The Phoenix Riders, one of the Warcross teams. They’re all so humourous and play an important role in how Emika acts and makes decisions. Along the way, they become great friends and I loved watching this slow progression.
While Hideo is sometimes a bit annoying, I enjoyed the journey of his relationship with Emika. It’s fun that there is some romantic elements throughout this book without it overtaking the overall plot.
Another thing that’s great about this book is the world building. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book before with such a vivid and descriptive world. You’ll wish Warcross was actually a game you could experience in real life!
Overall, Warcross is an epic start to a new duology. While it’s a science fiction, it’s full of mystery, intrigue, friendship and romance. I highly recommend checking it out!
