The Wheatons are infamous among the east coast elite for their lack of impulse control, except for their daughter Clara. She’s the consummate socialite: over-achieving, well-mannered, predictable. But every Wheaton has their weakness. When Clara’s childhood crush invites her to move cross-country, the offer is too much to resist. Unfortunately, it’s also too good to be true.
After a bait-and-switch, Clara finds herself sharing a lease with a charming stranger. Josh might be a bit too perceptive — not to mention handsome — for comfort, but there’s a good chance he and Clara could have survived sharing a summer sublet if she hadn’t looked him up on the Internet …
Once she learns how Josh has made a name for himself, Clara realizes living with him might make her the Wheaton’s most scandalous story yet. His professional prowess inspires her to take tackling the stigma against female desire into her own hands. They may not agree on much, but Josh and Clara both believe women deserve better sex. What they decide to do about it will change both of their lives, and if they’re lucky, they’ll help everyone else get lucky too.
The Roommate Review
I’ve been hearing about The Roommate for a while, so I decided it was finally time to pick it up! It’s a fun and enjoyable romance!
The Roommate follows Clara, who moves across the country to live with her childhood friend and crush. Once she arrives, she finds out that her childhood crush will not be staying and another roommate, Josh, will be moving in.
The characters in this book are really enjoyable. I like that Clara is a bit reserved and is put into a situation that pulls her out of her comfort zone. She’s extremely loyal and caring, and I loved seeing her engage in new social situations.
Josh is an interesting romantic interest. He is the complete opposite of Clara but I think it’s a good thing — they balance each other out. I also like that he pushes Clara to go outside her comfort zone, but in a gentle and caring way.
Naomi is by far my favourite character. Not only is she bold and blunt, but she’s the most loyal and caring friend I’ve seen. I just love every moment with her in this book and I can’t wait to read her story next!
The plot is a fun and engaging one — it’s certainly enjoyable! It’s really different from some of the other rom-coms I’ve read, but I think it’s uniqueness is what sets it apart from the rest.
I absolutely love Rosie Danan’s writing. It flows so well and makes for a nice, relaxing read. While this book is super steamy (the cover can be misleading), her writing makes the book go by fast. It’s the perfect read for those summer days when you want to read a book in one sitting.
My one and only issue with this book is with the pacing. I think at times things go really fast with Clara and Josh — which is a bit unrealistic to me. I personally prefer when things slowly build in romance books. Things happen so quickly into the book that I just wanted a bit more time and tension.
Overall, I think The Roommate is a fun and enjoyable rom-com. It’s perfect for those wanting a super steamy read, with likable characters. I think if you’re a fan of books like Fix Her Up, then you will love this one too!
