In this hilarious graphic novel, Edison Beaker is about to find out what services the family business, Creature Seekers Pest Control, really offer. (Hint: forget about rat and roach removal … think monster hunting!)
Edison Beaker and his young sister Tesla are staying with their uncle Earl, manager of the family pest control company, when an alarm sounds and he has no choice but to drag them along on a service call.
They should have listened when he warned them, “stay in the van.”
Monster-sized mayhem ensues when the kids chase their escaped hamster into a mysterious warehouse — and suddenly they are the ones being chased as all sorts of creepy creatures scurry, slink, and stomp through a secret Night Door.
The first of two new middle-school graphic novels that introduce a funny, smart, likable, reluctant hero and his wisecracking younger sister whose adventures are sure to appeal to readers of Lunch Lady, Hilo, and Caveboy Dave.
The Night Door Review
Graphic novels are interesting to me but I typically pick up my favourite genres first. I enjoyed this one so I’m really happy I picked it up!
The Night Door follows Edison Beaker who is afraid of the dark. When he and his sister Tesla go on a service call with their Uncle, they go behind the Night Door. While trying to find their Uncle, they run into monsters!
The illustrations in this graphic novel are really wonderful. There is an incredible amount of detail – both in the background and the character’s expressions. Obviously, the illustrations are important for a graphic novel, and this one does not disappoint!
Another thing that is great about The Night Door is the plot. At the heart, there is a message of strength and bravery. Edison grows stronger and braver in his investigation. And I think kids are going to learn from it.
There also happens to be a strong element of family, which is fantastic. I really enjoyed the bond that Edison and his sister share.
Overall, The Night Door is a really fun graphic novel that is perfect for a middle grade audience. I’m always looking for books to recommend to my students, and this one certainly made the list!
