The publisher kindly sent me a physical copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before meets Save the Date in this sweet and hijinks-filled rom-com about a teen girl who will do whatever it takes to find a date for her sister’s wedding.
Mia’s friends love rom-coms. Mia hates them. They’re silly, contrived, and not at all realistic. Besides, there are more important things to worry about — like how to handle living with her bridezilla sister, Sam, who’s never appreciated Mia, and surviving junior year juggling every school club offered and acing all of her classes.
So when Mia is tasked with finding a date to her sister’s wedding, her options are practically nonexistent.
Mia’s friends, however, have an idea. It’s a little crazy, a little out there, and a lot inspired by the movies they love that Mia begrudgingly watches too.
Mia just needs a meet-cute.
The Meet Cute Project Review
As soon as I heard about The Meet Cute Project, I immediately added it to my list of books to read in 2021. It’s a very sweet and charming young adult debut and I’m so glad I read it!
The Meet Cute Project follows Mia who needs to find a date to her sister’s upcoming wedding. Her friends, who all love rom-coms decide to set her up with meet-cutes to help her find a date.
I really enjoyed the characters in this book. Mia is a really driven main character, both with school and her personal life. She struggles with the ups and downs of high school life, while also dealing with her rocky relationship with her sister. But I like that we see her grow throughout the length of the book.
Mia’s relationships with her friends is also an enjoyable aspect of the book. I like the banter between the different personalities and their movie nights. It adds a really fun element to the book.
The overall plot of setting Mia up on meet-cutes is really intriguing. It’s a different kind of plot from what I’ve read before but I enjoyed it. I think it shows the reality of meeting people and how we all want it to be like the movies, but in reality, it’s not.
My only wish for the book is for there to be more romance. While it makes sense for it to be a slow-burn romance, I think the pace could be quicker. In the end, the romance just felt a little underwhelming for me, and I just wanted a bit more from it.
Overall, The Meet Cute Project is a solid contemporary romance. It’s perfect for those wanting a slow-burn romance and who love relatable main characters. I’m certainly on the lookout for Rhiannon Richardson’s future books!
