How do you punish an immortal?
By making him human.
After angering his father Zeus, the god Apollo is cast down from Olympus. Weak and disorientated, he lands in New York City as a regular teenage boy. Now, without his godly powers, the four-thousand-year-old deity must learn to survive in the modern world until he can somehow find a way to regain Zeus’s favour.
But Apollo has many enemies — gods, monsters and mortals who would love to see the former Olympian permanently destroyed. Apollo needs help, and he can think of only one place to go … an enclave of modern demigods known as Camp Half-Blood.
The Hidden Oracle Review
It’s crazy to say this, but this is my first ever Rick Riordan book! One of my closest friends loves Rick Riordan and suggested I try reading his newest series and I’m so happy I did!
The Hidden Oracle follows Apollo, who is sent to earth by his father, Zeus. As a result of his banishment, he’s a sixteen year old human (with acne and stomach flab, ob no!). Once he’s at Camp Half-Blood, he immediately deals with new threats and trials.
The most amazing thing about this book is Apollo. Oh my goodness, what an excellent character. He’s so funny, it makes you cry because of how much you’re laughing. His embarassment to be a human is certainly hilarious.
Apollo’s character arc is also fantastic. He goes from being a God to a human and his disappointment certainly shines through. He flourishes in his new body as well as with his new friends. I really can’t wait to see how he develops during the rest of the series.
Rick Riordan’s writing is also great. It’s clear why so many kids and young adults love his writing. It flows so well and he really does an amazing job of making his story and characters relatable.
My only disappointment in this book is probably because I haven’t read any other books by Rick Riordan. There is definitely a lot of characters and events that overlap in this book. While Rick Riordan does a good job at explaining, I wish I had the actual background. It certainly would add to my overall enjoyment of the book.
Overall, I think this is a great start to a new series. I’m also so happy I finally read one of Rick Riordan’s books. I can’t wait to continue the series and hopefully read the Percy Jackson series sometime in the future!
