Thomas thinks he’s an ordinary twelve year old, but when a strange little man with gold-flecked eyes gives him an ancient text called The Book of Sorrows, the world he knows is turned upside down. Suddenly he’s faced with a secret family legacy, powers he can hardly begin to understand, and an enemy bent on destroying everything he holds dear. The more he reads and discovers, the deeper the danger to himself and the people he loves. As the race to the final showdown unfolds, Thomas must turn to trusted friends and uncertain allies as he seeks to prevent destruction at an epic scale.
Thomas Wildus and the Book of Sorrows Review
Thomas Wildus and the Book of Sorrows is such a really fun middle grade fantasy. It certainly gives me some modern day Harry Potter vibes!
Thomas Wildus and the Book of Sorrows follows 12 year old Thomas. After kung-fu practice he is introduced to a magical book called the Book of Sorrows.
Thomas is a great main character because he’s relatable and likeable. I think a lot of middle grade readers will relate to his personality as well as his curiosity. I’m really curious to see his character develop more in future books! I also really enjoyed all of the supporting secondary characters!
The overall plot of this book is really fun. It’s full of magic and adventure as well as twists and turns that leave you wanting more. For a middle grade book, it has a great pace that will leave kids turning the page!
I also think that JM Bergen’s writing style is great. It flows really nicely and describes the plot as well as the setting perfectly for young readers. It is certainly a book that of Harry Potter and the Percy Jackson series will love!
Overall, it’s a wonderful start to a new middle grade series. Because of the action, adventure and magic, young readers will absolutely love it!

About the Author
When J.M. isn’t working on the Thomas Wildus books, you can find him playing with his kids, napping, and dreaming up new adventures. If you ever meet him and can’t think of anything to talk about, you might ask about Herman the Shark, the Kai and Eli stories, or why Riddle-Master by Patricia McKillip is his all-time favorite book. Or maybe, just maybe, you’ll have questions and stories of your own (if you do, he’ll think that’s far more interesting).
