The publisher kindly sent me a digital copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. In this beautiful, grounded, and darkly magical modern-day reimagining of J. M. Barrie’s classic, to save her daughter’s life one woman must take on…
ARC Review | Sea Witch Rising by Sarah Henning
This is definitely an enjoyable sequel to an epic fantasy retelling of the little mermaid! The first book, Sea Witch, was not my favourite and it did fall a little flat for me. But, I enjoyed it and thankfully, I enjoyed the sequel as well!
Sea Witch Rising picks up right after the events of Sea Witch. Evie is struggling with the events of the first book. But we also follow two new characters, Alia and Runa who are twins. Alia falls in love with a human and trades her voice with the Sea Witch to prove her love is reciprocated. Runa also makes a trade with the Sea Witch at a much steeper cost.
Sea Witch by Sarah Henning
Since I’m a big Disney fan, I’ve been looking forward to reading this book. While it is a retelling of The Little Mermaid, this book fell flat for me. The characters in this book are good. Although they’re not my favourite characters ever, I enjoyed them nonetheless. There are interesting aspects of antics and witty banter as well as a huge tone of friendship.
To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo
After hearing about To Kill a Kingdom, I’ve eagerly awaited it’s release! I’m so happy that the book lived up to my expectations! To Kill a Kingdom follows Lira, a siren who collects the hearts of Prince’s. It also follows Elian, a Prince who happens to be a siren hunter. Loosely based on The Little Mermaid, the Sea Queen sends Lira to collect the heart of a Prince without the use of her siren voice.
A Study in Charlotte by Brittany Cavallaro
I’ve always enjoyed mysteries – especially ones that relate to Sherlock Holmes. I had really high hopes for this modern retelling, but it just fell really flat. A Study in Charlotte is a gender-swapped, modern retelling of Sherlock Holmes. It follows Charlotte Holmes, the great-great-great granddaughter of the famous detective. She teams up with fellow student, Jamie Watson to help solve a mysterious murder.
The Afterlife of Holly Chase by Cynthia Hand
I absolutely love Christmas – the movies, the decorations, the music. The overall atmosphere is the best. Because of this, I was looking for a great holiday read. And let me tell you, this young adult book, is perfect! One of my favourite Christmas movies is Scrooged with Bill Murray. It’s a modern retelling of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and it’s just always been a favourite.
Geekerella by Ashley Poston
I really love retellings and fairytales. I’m a huge Disney fan and love the world of fairytales because they allow you to escape into a world you only dream about. When Penguin reached out to me about Geekerella, I was immediately interested. It’s a little outside of my comfort zone with respect to plot, but I definitely wanted to give it a try.
