Ever since last year’s homecoming dance, best friends-turned-best enemies Zorie and Lennon have made an art of avoiding each other. It doesn’t hurt that their families are the modern-day Californian version of the Montagues and Capulets.
But when a group camping trip goes south, Zorie and Lennon find themselves stranded in the wilderness. Alone. Together.
What could go wrong?
With no one but each other for company, Zorie and Lennon have no choice but to hash out their issues via witty jabs and insults as they try to make their way to safety. But fighting each other while also fighting off the forces of nature makes getting out of the woods in one piece less and less likely.
And as the two travel deeper into Northern California’s rugged backcountry, secrets and hidden feelings surface. But can Zorie and Lennon’s rekindled connection survive out in the real world? Or was it just a result of the fresh forest air and the magic of the twinkling stars?
Starry Eyes Review
After reading Alex Approximately, I immediately knew that Jenn Bennett would be a new favourite author for me. And Starry Eyes is no different. In fact, I loved it even more than Alex, Approximately!
Starry Eyes follows Zorie, a serial planner who happens to join an impromtu camping excursion with a group of friends. But, her ex-best friend and now enemy Lennon joins the trip. Camping and hiking will either bring them together or push them farther apart.
I absolutely LOVE these characters. Zorie and Lennon are such unique characters but they’re also so relatable! Zorie is really relatable for me because it’s hard for her to get outside of her comfort zone. So I think it’s great to see the way in which Lennon accepts her but also pushes her. They are so different but they balance each other out, which is so great to see.
Enemies to friends and/or lovers is one of my favourite tropes. And I think Jenn Bennett does an excellent job in Starry Eyes. The witty banter between these characters as well as their sassy back talk is just perfect. But I also couldn’t help but root for them to be together!
The overall plot is just fantastic. It’s so fun reading about the outdoors and experiencing it with these characters. The writing and flow of the book is so great that you honestly feel like you’re out in the woods with these characters. I think this is what I love about Jenn Bennett the most — her books just suck you in and bring you right into the story.
Overall, Starry Eyes is a fantastic book and one I will re-read over and over again. It’s the perfect summer read because it’ll make you smile, laugh and constantly have you turning the page.
