While I didn’t have a chance to share a reading update in September, I’m happy to share my September and October 2023 reading wrap up with you all!
It’s hard to believe we’re heading into the last two months of the year!
While I’ve enjoyed the spooky season, I’m really excited to get into holiday mode. Spooky season didn’t do much for my reading this year but I thoroughly enjoyed the movies and Halloween themed tv shows I watched throughout the month.
With November, I’ll be tuning into the Hallmark Christmas movies and hopefully picking up some new Christmas book releases. It’s also my birthday at the end of the month, so there’s lots of exciting things!
My reading in September wasn’t the greatest — I stopped reading halfway through the month and didn’t pick up another book until the middle of October. I picked up several books and just wasn’t getting into them. I think this was more of my mood and hopefully I’ll be able to pick up those books at another time.
In September, I read a total of 4 books — one 2023 release and the rest were backlist titles. In October, I read a total of 5 books — two 2023 releases, two re-reads and one backlist title.

September 2023 Reading Wrap Up
The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. I read The Inheritance Games a while ago but never continued with the series. With the release of The Brothers Hawthorne, I knew I wanted to pick up the original series. I enjoyed my re-read, it’s an interesting book with fun puzzles and intriguing characters.
The Hawthorne Legacy by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. I immediately jumped into The Hawthorne Legacy after finishing The Inheritance Games. It was another solid read. I will say that this series isn’t necessarily the best young adult mystery series I’ve read but I still enjoyed it and it made me excited to see how the series concluded.
The Final Gambit by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. The Final Gambit is probably my least favourite of the series. It was good and another solid read but I didn’t really love it as much as I hoped. Since I didn’t love it, I decided not to jump into The Brothers Hawthorne right away and give myself a little bit of a break from the world.
Just Don’t Fall by Emma St. Clair. This was my first book by Emma St. Clair and I really enjoyed it! It really is a sweet romantic comedy with adorable characters. It was my first hockey themed romance and now I’m definitely itching to read some more. I’ll definitely be picking up the rest of the books in this series and am excited to pick up more of Emma St. Clair’s books in the future.
October 2023 Reading Wrap Up
Better Than the Movies by Lynn Painter. After a big reading slump, I decided to pick up a book I knew I loved. This was my second time reading Better Than the Movies and it was just as good as the first time. There’s something about the way Lynn Painter writes her stories and creates her characters that’s captivating. I just adore her books and this one definitely brought me out of my reading slump!
Grimoire Girl by Hilarie Burton Morgan. While I was reading Better Than the Movies, my signed pre-order of Grimoire Girl came in. I decided to pick it up to help cross off prompts on the Popsugar Reading Challenge and the Buzzwordathon. I really enjoyed this one. It’s a great mix of memoir and advice on creating traditions in your life. I love Hilarie’s writing — it’s full of honesty, wit and compelling stories.
The Do-Over by Lynn Painter. Since I loved my re-read of Better Than the Movies, I had to pick up The Do-Over. This one was just as fun as the first time around. It’s the perfect mix of Groundhog Day with a rom-com twist. It’s funny and full of great banter.
Betting On You by Lynn Painter. I decided to continue my Lynn Painter streak and pick up my advance copy of her next young adult release. Lynn Painter does it again! I’m always in awe of the stories she creates and how she consistently creates addicting characters, swoonworthy romance and an all around enjoyable story. I can’t wait for my physical copy of this to arrive to add to my collection!
Twice in a Blue Moon by Christina Lauren. I’m still trying to catch up on all of Christina Lauren’s backlist. While I enjoyed this one, it’s not one of my favourites. The romance was good, but I also wish there was a bit more focus on it rather than the movie script. I think it was a solid read but I don’t know if I see myself re-reading it in the future.
