The publisher kindly sent me a digital copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Charlie Grant’s older sister is getting married this weekend at their family home, and Charlie can’t wait for the first time in years, all four of her older siblings will be under one roof. Charlie is desperate for one last perfect weekend, before the house is sold and everything changes. The house will be filled with jokes and games and laughs again. Making decisions about things like what college to attend and reuniting with longstanding crush Jesse Foster all that can wait. She wants to focus on making the weekend perfect.
The only problem? The weekend is shaping up to be an absolute disaster. There’s the unexpected dog with a penchant for howling, house alarm that won’t stop going off, and a papergirl with a grudge.
There are the relatives who aren’t speaking, the (awful) girl her favorite brother brought home unannounced, and a missing tuxedo. Not to mention the neighbor who seems to be bent on sabotage and a storm that is bent on drenching everything. The justice of the peace is missing. The band will only play covers. The guests are all crazy. And the wedding planner’s nephew is unexpectedly, distractedly cute.
Over the course of three ridiculously chaotic days, Charlie will learn more than she ever expected about the family she thought she knew by heart. And she’ll realize that sometimes, trying to keep everything like it was in the past means missing out on the future.
Save the Date Review
Since I read The Unexpected Everything, I’ve been excited to pick up another book by Morgan Matson. While Save the Date is different from her previous book, I really enjoyed it!
Save the Date follows Charlie and her family as they prepare for her sister’s wedding. Since the book takes place over the course of a weekend, everything seems to go wrong. Because of this, it’s a weekend filled with drama, chaos and dealing with change.
I really enjoyed the characters in this book overall. Charlie is a fun main character and her relationship with her family is precious. The witty banter between her and her siblings is impressive and I totally enjoyed it. Also, Waffles the dog is adorable and I love him.
As I said before, this book takes place over the course of one weekend. Since Morgan’s books usually span a longer period of time, this is an enjoyable change of pace. There’s so much suspense and anticipation for the important day.
While Morgan Matson packs a lot of things into the course of a three day weekend, it flows really nicely and never feels forced.
Romance is certainly not the main part of this book, which is different for Morgan Matson. The elements of romance and the butterflies are certainly there. But she chooses to focus more n the love of family. I think it’s a really great choice for this book.
Overall, Save the Date is a really enjoyable book from Morgan Matson. As a whole, it’s charming, uplifting and full of cheesy and chaotic moments. It’s the perfect book to read during the summer!

Awesome review, lovely! I’m so excited that you loved this one. To be honest, I’m already a Morgan Matson fan for her super adorable romances, so I’m a bit scared that she’s doing something different. I hope I end up loving the family dynamics (and Waffles!) too. β₯
