I’m so excited to be joining the Sadie blog tour with Raincoast Books! Today I’ll be sharing my thoughts on the book as well as a mini Q&A with the author, Courtney Summers!
If you have the time, you should definitely consider checking out The Girls podcast. It’s an original crime podcast based on Sadie. I’ve been following along each week and it’s really entertaining.
The publisher kindly sent me a physical copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Sadie hasn’t had an easy life. Growing up on her own, she’s been raising her sister Mattie in an isolated small town, trying her best to provide a normal life and keep their heads above water.
But when Mattie is found dead, Sadie’s entire world crumbles. After a somewhat botched police investigation, Sadie is determined to bring her sister’s killer to justice and hits the road following a few meagre clues to find him.
When West McCray — a radio personality working on a segment about small, forgotten towns in America — overhears Sadie’s story at a local gas station, he becomes obsessed with finding the missing girl. He starts his own podcast as he tracks Sadie’s journey, trying to figure out what happened, hoping to find her before it’s too late.
Sadie Review
Since I’ve ventured into the thriller genre, I’ve been curious to try more young adult thrillers. I’m really happy to say that Sadie may be a new favourite!
Sadie follows nineteen-year old Sadie Hunter. She ends up leaving her hometown to hunt down the person she thinks killed her thirteen-year-old sister, Mattie.
Sadie is told through two perspectives – West McCray, the host of The Girls podcast as well as through Sadie. Both Sadie and West McCray are excellent characters. Although Sadie’s story is sad and emotional, it’s gripping to read.
These characters are each relatable in their own way. Sadie shows the heartache one feels during difficult times as well as the deep desire to find a solution. On the other hand, West McCray acts exactly how I think someone investigating crime would act. I think this adds to the overall enjoyment of the story.
Another thing that’s great about this book is the podcast chapters. It’s a really new and refreshing way to tell a story, at least for me. Because it’s so unique, it really sets this book apart from the rest.
I think Courtney Summers does an amazing job at allowing certain discoveries to happen while ‘listening’ to the podcast. It’s surprising that there are still things to discover, especially after reading Sadie’s chapters.
The podcast chapters are very genuine and realistic. You actually feel like you’re listening to a crime podcast, which adds to the overall enjoyment of the book.
I think that Courtney Summers does a great job at exploring intense topics. This includes abuse and its many forms, addiction as well as violence. I think the book opens this up for discussion and it will certainly toy with your emotions. Courtney Summers does this in a really graceful way.
Overall, I highly recommend picking up Sadie. It’s a gripping, emotional and inspiring book all rooted in love. It’s a definite game changer for the young adult thriller genre. The edge of your seat twists are certainly worth the read alone!

Q&A with Courtney Summers
Your books deal with heavy topics. Do you draw on real life events, such as ones reported on the news, or are these situations inspired by your imagination?
My books, so far, are not inspired by specific, real world events but they are definitely informed by the world in which we live. For example, I’ve consistently explored violence against women and girls in my work, which is an issue that is very present in real life.
