GENRE(S): ClassicsWhen Marilla Cuthbert and her brother, Matthew, decide to adopt a child from a distant orphanage, they don’t get quite what they bargained for. The child who awaits them at the tiny Bright River train station is not the strapping young boy they’d imagined–someone to help Matthew work the fields of their small farm–but rather a freckle-faced, redheaded girl named Anne (with an e, if you please).
Matthew and Marilla may not be sure about Anne, but Anne takes one look at Prince Edward Island’s red clay roads and the Cuthberts’ snug white farmhouse with its distinctive green gables and decides that she’s home at last. But will she be able to convince Marilla and Matthew to let her stay?
Armed with only a battered carpetbag and a boundless imagination, Anne charms her way into the Cuthberts’ hearts–and into the hearts of readers as well. She truly is, in the words of Mark Twain, “the dearest and most lovable child in fiction since the immortal Alice.”
Review
This book is charming and super adorable. It’s my absolute favourite classic novel and I think it’s one everyone should read at least once in their lifetime.
Anne of Green Gables follows Anne, a young orphan who is adopted by a brother and sister in Prince Edward Island, Canada. While they originally want a young boy to help with the farm, they quickly fall for Anne. She’s imaginative, creative and sometimes unrealistic, but incredibly loving.
I absolutely adore Anne. She’s so adorable and is just such a sweet girl. She’s had a rough time trying to find her perfect home, and her start at Green Gables is just as rough. Her imagination is incredible and I just love her outlook on life. I think it’s super sweet how she transforms almost every person’s view on life throughout the course of this novel.
Matthew and Marilla are so charming. Matthew and his immediate connection to Anne is the sweetest thing I’ve ever read. While he knows Marilla isn’t going to be happy to have a girl, there’s something about Anne that he immediately loves. Marilla is a tough cookie and certainly is strict. But seeing her love for Anne grow and evolve is fantastic.
Diana and Gilbert are amazing side characters. I love the witty banter between each of them and Anne. And honestly, the feud with Gilbert is one of the cutest and funniest things ever.
Lucy Maud Montgomery’s writing is fantastic. It flows beautifully and tugs at your heartstrings. She makes Anne and Prince Edward Island leap through the pages. While this book is over 100 years old, it’s writing is still relevant and beautiful.
While I have read Anne of Green Gables several times in my life, I’ve never read the rest of the series. I recently bought them and am super excited to continue on. I can’t wait to read more about Anne and her crazy antics.
Overall, Anne of Green Gables is a wonderful classic novel. It’s one that advanced young readers, young adults and adults will absolutely love. I highly, highly recommend!
