The publisher kindly provided me with a digital copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Two best friends. Ten summer trips. One last chance to fall in love.
Poppy and Alex. Alex and Poppy. They have nothing in common. She’s a wild child; he wears khakis. She has insatiable wanderlust; he prefers to stay home with a book. And somehow, ever since a fateful car share home from college many years ago, they are the very best of friends. For most of the year they live far apart — she’s in New York City, and he’s in their small hometown — but every summer, for a decade, they have taken one glorious week of vacation together.
Until two years ago, when they ruined everything. They haven’t spoken since.
Poppy has everything she should want, but she’s stuck in a rut. When someone asks when she was last truly happy, she knows, without a doubt, it was on that ill-fated, final trip with Alex. And so, she decides to convince her best friend to take one more vacation together — lay everything on the table, make it all right. Miraculously, he agrees.
Now she has a week to fix everything. If only she can get around the one big truth that has always stood quietly in the middle of their seemingly perfect relationship. What could possibly go wrong?
From the New York Times bestselling author of Beach Read, a sparkling new novel that will leave you with the warm, hazy afterglow usually reserved for the best vacations.
People We Meet on Vacation Review
I have been wanting to read Beach Read ever since I heard all the hype surrounding it. While I haven’t read it yet, I’m happy to say that I really enjoyed her second adult novel, People We Meet on Vacation.
People We Meet on Vacation follows Poppy and Alex, two best friends who met in college. Every summer the two of them go on vacation together but after one of them, they stop talking. After two years, Poppy asks Alex to join her on vacation so they can fix their friendship.
Poppy is a really interesting main character. She’s quirky and unique but she’s also bold and determined. I love that she is able to combine her love of traveling with her work — it’s given her and Alex so many fun opportunities.
I also really like Alex — he’s a bit quiet and a little guarded. But Poppy pulls a side out of him that’s really enjoyable to see. I think his dynamic with Poppy is really great and it definitely had me turning the pages.
While the book jumps back and forth between past vacations and their current one, I think it was a good fit. It didn’t seem too jumpy and all in all, I think it worked for the storyline.
My only complaint with the book is the fact that I had to wait so long to find out what happened on their vacation to cause a break in their friendship. And when it was revealed, it was a little anti-climatic for me. Since a large portion of the book is waiting for this reveal, it ended up falling a little flat for me.
Overall, People We Meet on Vacation is a really sweet and enjoyable read. It’s definitely the perfect summer read for the pool or the beach and can easily be finished in a day!
Since I enjoyed this one so much, I really am looking forward to finally reading Beach Read!
