Since I’m always on the hunt for great contemporary reads, What If It’s Us has been on my radar. Thankfully, I really enjoyed this book! What If It’s Us follows Arthur and Ben. After meeting at a post office in New York City, they quickly build a friendship over the course of a summer.

Once I heard about A Very Large Expanse of Sea at the HCC Frenzy Fall Preview, I knew I had to read it. I am so glad I did because I absolutely adore this book! A Very Large Expanse of Sea follows Shirin, a Muslim teenager who is navigating an insensitive world following the 9/11 attacks. She’s extremely guarded because of the comments and stares she gets, purely because of who she is. Then comes Ocean, and her whole world changes.

When We Caught Fire is a quick historical fiction book that focuses on friendship and love. While I was incredibly excited for this book, it fell flat for me. When We Caught Fire follows Emmeline, a young socialite, and her best friend Fiona, a lady’s maid. After seeing her old childhood crush, Emmeline must decide if it’s worth pursing and losing her place in society.

After the death of their parents, they go to live with their relative, Count Olaf. But, Count Olaf is only interested in their family fortune!
An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir
I have heard about An Ember in the Ashes for years, and finally decided to pick it up. Boy, I’m so glad I did. This book is incredible! An Ember in the Ashes follows Laia, a slave who tries to free her brother after the Empire arrests him. Because of this, she works as a spy for some rebels at the Empire’s military academy.
