What happens when your life is a rom-com … but you don’t even believe in true love?
Chloe Sanderson is an optimist, and not because her life is easy. As the sole caregiver for her father, who has early onset Alzheimer’s, she’s pretty much responsible for everything. She has no time — or interest — in getting swept up in some dazzling romance. Not like her best friend Annie, who literally wrote a rom-com that’s about to premiere in theaters across America … and happens to be inspired by Chloe and Nick Velez, Chloe’s cute but no-nonsense boss.
As the buzz for the movie grows, Chloe reads one too many listicles about why Nick is the perfect man, and now she can’t see him as anything but Reason #2: The Scruffy-Bearded Hunk Who’s Always There When You Need Him. But unlike the romance Annie has written for them, Chloe isn’t so sure her own story will end in a Happily Ever After.
Not Like the Movies Review
When I read Waiting for Tom Hanks last year, I immediately fell in love. Since then, I’ve been eagely waiting for the release of Not Like the Movies and I’m so happy to say that I loved it!
Not Like the Movies follows Chloe, the best friend of the main character in the first book. She doesn’t believe in rom-coms or happy endings but doesn’t realize that love is right in front of her.
I was a little skeptical about this book. Since I loved Waiting for Tom Hanks so much, I didn’t know if it could live up to my expectations. But I absolutely adore Chloe. She’s such a fantastic character and I’m so glad there’s a book from her perspective.
Chloe is such a cute and quirky character. She’s loyal and thinks about everyone before herself. To me, I find this so relatable and I love that about her character. Nick is the opposite of her because he’s quiet and reserved. At times he reminds me of Nick from New Girl … I definitely got those vibes.
The romance in this book is just really sweet. It’s not underwhelming or totally cliche. It’s a bit of a slow burn but it’s really enjoyable. You can’t help but root for Chloe to get her true rom-com ending.
I think that’s what I love about Kerry Winfrey’s books in general. They remind me so much of the rom-com movies I love. They’re light and enjoyable and leave you totally satisfied by the end.
The overall plot of the book is great. There’s lots of enjoyable side characters and I loved getting a glimpse into Annie’s life. It’s always fun to revisit characters after their story has ended and see what they’re up to!
Overall, Not Like the Movies is a wonderful rom-com. It’s heartfelt and filled with lovely characters that will leave you smiling. I can’t wait to read more of Kerry Winfrey’s books in the future!
