I am so excited to be joining the Save the Date blog tour with the Fantastic Flying Book Club! Today, I’m sharing a Q&A with Morgan Matson!
Morgan Matson has quickly become one of my favourite young adult contemporary authors. It’s been amazing to not only review her newest book, but also to ask her some questions.
This is certainly a highlight in my blogging journey and I’m so happy my first author Q&A is with Morgan!
Following this post there is a link to a special Save the Date giveaway, so definitely check it out!
Q&A with Morgan Matson
What was your inspiration for Save the Date? Did it come to you quicky, or was it a slow process?
It was a couple of different things! I’d been wanting to write about a big family for a while – Palmer, one of the side characters in The Unexpected Everything, comes from a big family and I just spent a lot more time talking about her siblings than I should have, since we never actually meet them. I’d been wanting to try something different in terms of the timeline – my last three books had all taken place over the course of a whole summer, and I thought it would be a fun challenge to write a book that took place over only a couple of days. So it came from wanting to try a whole bunch of different things, all at once!
The main character Charlie clearly loves her family. What family member(s) was your favourite storyline or dialogue to write?
I was happiest writing the scenes when the whole family was interacting. So many characters, so much banter! It was so great. My favourite character to write by far as Charlie’s brother J.J. I actually had to pull him back in spots because he was just threatening to take over whole scenes. My editor kept reminding me that this wasn’t a book about J.J.
What was your favourite place to write this book? Is it different during the editing process?
I love to travel and take writing retreats, so this book was written both in my home in Los Angeles and all over the world! My favorite place to write this was probably Italy, where I was in the summer of 2016, on a writing retreat with friends. In the editing process, I tend to like to be at home so I can pace around, think through things, go for walks.
What is your favourite quote from Save the Date?
“I didn’t just get here.” – multiple people say it throughout the book, and it’s something I always say, so I love that it got incorporated.
Is there a young adult novel you’ve recently loved and would recommend?
I loved Siobhan Vivian’s Stay Sweet! Such a great summer read about friendship, feminism, and ice cream.
Name two to four fictional characters you would love to have as friends in real life.
Hermione Granger, Lara Jean Covey, Bertie Wooster, and Nikolai Lantsov.
In addition to reading, I love watching TV. Reality shows are my guilty pleasure. What are your go-to TV shows?
I watch SO much TV. Lately, I’m loving Superstore, Brooklyn 99, The Good Place, The Good Fight, Killing Eve, Westworld, and Speechless.
