The Shadowhunters of Los Angeles star in the first novel in Cassandra Clare’s newest series, The Dark Artifices, a sequel to the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series. Lady Midnight is a Shadowhunters novel.
It’s been five years since the events of City of Heavenly Fire that brought the Shadowhunters to the brink of oblivion. Emma Carstairs is no longer a child in mourning, but a young woman bent on discovering what killed her parents and avenging her losses.
Together with her parabatai Julian Blackthorn, Emma must learn to trust her head and her heart as she investigates a demonic plot that stretches across Los Angeles, from the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica. If only her heart didn’t lead her in treacherous directions…
Making things even more complicated, Julian’s brother Mark—who was captured by the faeries five years ago—has been returned as a bargaining chip. The faeries are desperate to find out who is murdering their kind—and they need the Shadowhunters’ help to do it. But time works differently in faerie, so Mark has barely aged and doesn’t recognize his family. Can he ever truly return to them? Will the faeries really allow it?
Glitz, glamours, and Shadowhunters abound in this heartrending opening to Cassandra Clare’s Dark Artifices series.
Lady Midnight Review
I am a really big Cassandra Clare fan. In addition to the Harry Potter series, I really think her books got me into fantasy. Needless to say, I love the Shadowhunter world.
Lady Midnight is a fantastic start to a brand new Shadowhunter trilogy. Once again, Cassandra Clare tugs at my heartstrings and breaks my heart all with the written word. She truly is remarkable writer.
Lady Midnight picks up five years after the events of City of Heavenly Fire. This time around, we’re following the Shadowhunters at the Los Angeles Institute. Emma and Julian have both experienced tragic losses and continue to lean on each other. It’s through their friendship that they try and solve a crazy mystery.
When I first started to read Lady Midnight, I actually had trouble getting into the story. Everytime I’ve read one of Cassandra Clare’s books, I’m quickly sucked into the world. But, it took a few times of picking this book for me to truly get into it.
And I’m so glad I did. Because this book is fantastic.
I absolutely love these new characters. I honestly can’t even put my love into words. Emma is wonderful. She’s strong and fierce. The unbreakable friendship between Emma and Julian is something I totally admire. And their chemistry with one another is really undeniable.
Christina is a perfect friend for Emma and I really enjoyed seeing her character develop. And don’t get me started on Julian’s family. They’re so cute and oh-so adorable. They’re the easiest characters to love.
Julian’s selflessness and protection of his family is absolutely tear worthy at some moments. I just love him so much.
Another thing that is fantastic about Cassandra Clare’s books are the cameos. I love the precious moments we get with some of our favourite Shadowhunter characters. Any extra moments with them are so great!
Cassandra Clare is amazing at building epic and vivid worlds. And the story is truly incredible because I didn’t see the twists and turns that came my way. The revelations that occur towards the end of the book are so well done!
Lady Midnight is a fantastic start to The Dark Artifices series. I can’t wait to pick up Lord of Shadows, to see how everything continues.
Overall, I highly recommend Lady Midnight if you are a fan of Cassandra Clare and the shadowhunter world. I would recommend picking up The Mortal Instruments series and The Infernal Devices series before picking up Lady Midnight. There are characters and some context from those books that is somewhat neccessary to the events of this series.
