At a Hallowe’en party, Joyce — a hostile thirteen-year-old — boasts that she once witnessed a murder. When no one believes her, she storms off home. But within hours her body is found, still in the house, drowned in an apple-bobbing tub.
That night, Hercule Poirot is called in to find the “evil presence.” But first he must establish whether he is looking for a murderer or a double murderer …
Hallowe’en Party Review
There’s nothing like a good mystery — especially during the fall months!
I read my first Agatha Christie book last year and have been eager to read more. With Halloween around the corner, it seemed like the perfect time to try this one out!
Hallowe’en Party is a Hercule Poirot mystery. It follows Hercule as he investigates the murder of a young teen at a local Halloween party.
While this is my first Hercule Poirot mystery, it was really enjoyable. I think he’s an interesting character who is certainly really quirky. I think I would have enjoyed a bit more character background, but I would probably get that with earlier books.
The side characters are also enjoyable. Agatha Christie does a great job of intertwining several personalities all while moving the plot forward. I particularly enjoyed Ariadne — especially the constant reminder that she loves apples.
The mystery in Hallowe’en Party is good. Agatha Christie really does an exceptional job of raising suspicion and surprising you with the outcome. I’ve only read And Then There Were None so I don’t have much to compare this mystery to. But, I really preferred the ending of And Then There Were None. It really shocked and surprised me.
My only wish with this book is that it was more Halloween themed. The murder takes place at a local Halloween party, but that’s the only aspect of Halloween in the book. It’s still fun and gets you in the Halloween spirit. But, I just wish it had a bit more of the theme!
Overall, Hallowe’en Party is a solid murder mystery. It’s the perfect cozy mystery to read with Halloween coming up. And it’s certainly a reminder as to why Agatha Christie is the Queen of mystery!
