The publisher kindly sent me a physical copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Anything can happen once upon a con …
When geek girl Elle Wittimer sees a cosplay contest sponsored by the producers of Starfield, she has to enter. First prize is an invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. Elle’s been scraping together tips from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck behind her stepmother’s back, and winning this contest could be her ticket out once and for all – not to mention a fangirl’s dream come true.
Teen actor Darien Freeman is less than thrilled about this year’s ExcelsiCon. He used to live for conventions, but now they’re nothing but jaw-aching photo sessions and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Federation Prince Carmindor is all he’s ever wanted, but the diehard Starfield fandom has already dismissed him as just another heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, closet nerd Darien feels more and more like a fake – until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise.
Geekerella Review
I really love retellings and fairytales. I’m a huge Disney fan and love the world of fairytales because they allow you to escape into a world you only dream about.
When Penguin reached out to me about Geekerella, I was immediately interested. It’s a little outside of my comfort zone with respect to plot, but I definitely wanted to give it a try.
Geekerella follows Elle, a teenage girl who enters a cosplay competition, sponsored by her favourite show. If she wins first place, she’ll have the opportunity to meet the actor who plays the Prince. Because of this competition, Elle meets teenage actor Darien and a unique relationship begins!
Unfortunately for me, I’m somewhat disappointed by this book. I’m not sure if it’s because I went into it with such high hopes. Or possibly, it just isn’t my kind of book. From the beginning, I had difficulty getting into it and in the end, I was only mildly interested.
While I’m not a huge fan of the plot of this book, the writing is a huge plus. Ashley Poston’s writing is really spectacular. She writes beautifully and because of that, the pacing of is really well done.
Elle and Darien are enjoyable characters and I feel like they are what kept me going throughout the length of the book. I really like the way Ashley Poston writes both of their characters and the perspectives she gives them. It really helps the characters jump through the pages!
I think the biggest hurdle for me with this book is the fan fiction and cosplay plot. It’s just not really my thing, so it was an obstacle I couldn’t get over. I would say however, that if you’re a big lover of fan-fiction, then this book is definitely for you. I have a friend who will totally love this book!
I’m really thankful that Penguin Random House Canada sent me a copy of this book. It certainly opened my eyes to different types of fairytale retellings. While I enjoyed Ashley Poston’s writing and characters, the plot just wasn’t for me.
