“A line that should never be crossed is about to be breached.
It puts this entire castle in jeopardy—and the life of your friend.”
From the throne of glass rules a king with a fist of iron and a soul as black as pitch. Assassin Celaena Sardothien won a brutal contest to become his Champion. Yet Celaena is far from loyal to the crown. She hides her secret vigilantly; she knows that the man she serves is bent on evil.
Keeping up the deadly charade becomes increasingly difficult when Celaena realizes she is not the only one seeking justice. As she tries to untangle the mysteries buried deep within the glass castle, her closest relationships suffer. It seems no one is above questioning her allegiances — not the Crown Prince Dorian; not Chaol, the Captain of the Guard; not even her best friend, Nehemia, a foreign princess with a rebel heart.
Then one terrible night, the secrets they have all been keeping lead to an unspeakable tragedy. As Celaena’s world shatters, she will be forced to give up the very thing most precious to her and decide once and for all where her true loyalties lie … and whom she is ultimately willing to fight for.
Crown of Midnight Review
After reading and loving Throne of Glass, I’m happy I’ve finally read the sequel. It’s another really great book in the world of Sarah J Maas.
The Throne of Glass series follows Celaena as she competes to become the King’s Champion. Because I’m avoiding spoilers, Crown of Midnight picks up right after the events of the first book and adds some extra mystery to the plot!
The characters are still great in this sequel. After reading the first book, I was curious as to how Celaena would further develop in this sequel. Celaena really grows throughout this book and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I think it’s interesting to see how Celaena struggles internally with her own decisions but also with the ones people make for her. I also love how Celaena triumphs above the events of the first book and uses it to her advantage!
The continuation of the relationships with Dorian and Chaol is great. I still have to say I really love them both! While it bothers me not to have a favourite, I love the witty banter between Celaena and the boys. It just adds to the overall enjoyment of the story.
Compared to the first book, the pacing of Crown of Midnight is a bit slow. But this could also be because I just read the A Court of Thorns and Roses series and couldn’t put it down. It’s not until the midway point in this book that I truly became invested.
Sarah J Maas is certainly shaping up to be one of my all time favourite authors because of the vivid and epic worlds she creates. With each book of hers that I read, I become more invested because of the beautiful stories and writing.
Overall, Crown of Midnight is an enjoyable read and the ending has me super excited for the next book. While the ending is a bit predictable, it’s also one to remember.
If you’re a fan of epic fantasy books and strong female characters, I certainly recommend the Throne of Glass series!

Oh my god, I JUST finished this book too!!! How funny! I totally agree with everything you said. I was so blase about this during the beginning half, but then halfway it’s like Sarah suddenly kicks it into high gear and it gets CRAZY. Pretty sure my chin was on the floor during the entire last half 😂 And I also agree about being torn between Dorian and Chaol. I’ve been leaning more towards Chaol too, but my book friends have said that definitely changes later on and I’m so worried!!! Anyway, awesome review!!
