Chain of Gold is the first novel in a new trilogy that stars the Shadowhunters of Edwardian London.
Welcome to Edwardian London, a time of electric lights and long shadows, the celebration of artistic beauty and the wild pursuit of pleasure, with demons waiting in the dark. For years there has been peace in the Shadowhunter world. James and Lucie Herondale, children of the famous Will and Tessa, have grown up in an idyll with their loving friends and family, listening to stories of good defeating evil and love conquering all. But everything changes when the Blackthorn and Carstairs families come to London … and so does a remorseless and inescapable plague.
James Herondale longs for a great love, and thinks he has found it in the beautiful, mysterious Grace Blackthorn. Cordelia Carstairs is desperate to become a hero, save her family from ruin, and keep her secret love for James hidden. When disaster strikes the Shadowhunters, James, Cordelia and their friends are plunged into a wild adventure which will reveal dark and incredible powers, and the true cruel price of being a hero … and falling in love.
Chain of Gold Review
Cassandra Clare does it again! I swear her books just get better and that is certainly the case with Chain of Gold.
Chain of Gold is the start of a brand new trilogy inside the world of Shadowhunters. Chain of Gold follows James and Lucie Herondale and their friends as they deal with a mysterious sickness spreading throughout the Shadowhunter world.
One of the many reasons I love Cassandra Clare’s books is because of the characters. Will and Tessa are two of my all-time favourite characters so it’s wonderful to get more time with them!
James and Lucie are absolutely fantastic. I just adore their witty sibling banter and their undying loyalty to one another. It just makes it even better that they all share the same friends and we get another wonderful generation of Shadowhunters.
Cordelia Carstairs is certainly the star of this book (at least in my opinion). Not only is she adorable but she’s loyal, brave and fiesty. I know she’s going to be one of my favourites!
I also love the mysterious addition of Grace Blackthorn. She’s incredibly suspicious so I’m looking forward to see how her story continues!
The plot of Chain of Gold is really enjoyable, although it does hit close to home because of the current pandemic. It certainly feels weird to see these Shadowhunters dealing with a plague when it’s similar to the world right now. But, it does not take away from the overall enjoyment!
Cassandra Clare always has me turning the page for more. And Chain of Gold is no different. There’s twists and turns that leave you wanting more. The world-building is so vivid that you feel like you’re in Edwardian London. Everything jumps through the pages.
I just can’t wait for the next addition to the series. Cassandra Clare will always be a favourite of mine and I love that her books just get better and better.
Overall, Chain of Gold is such an enjoyable read. It introduces us to a brand new generation of Shadowhunters that you’re sure to love as much as the ones before. The plot and the writing are fantastic and will leave you wanting more!
It’s the perfect read for fans of Cassandra Clare as well as for those wanting a book that constantly leaves them wanting more. If you’re new to Cassandra Clare, I definitely recommend reading her previous Shadowhunter series to ensure you get the proper reading experience!

I’m sooo behind in this series. I just bought The Dark Artifices series a few weeks ago when they were on sale, so it’s a start.

The cover is beautiful! One of my other favourite Cassandra Clare series takes place during the late 1800s and I just love the setting!
