Remember, it’s only a game …
Scarlett Dragna has never left the tiny island where she and her sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval — the faraway, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show — are over.
But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt-of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.
Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. Nevertheless she becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic. And whether Caraval is real or not, Scarlett must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over or a dangerous domino effect of consequences will be set off, and her beloved sister will disappear forever.
Welcome, welcome to Caraval … beware of getting swept too far away.
Caraval Review
I have been hearing so much about Caraval since it’s release. I’m so glad I finally picked it up – it’s a fantastic book!
Caraval follows Scarlett Dragna – a teenage girl who is desperate to experience more in life. She longs to experience Caraval, a magical performance that includes its spectators. When her invitation to play arrives, she gets more than she bargains for!
I love the characters in this book. Scarlett is an interesting main character and heroine. She definitely has flaws and quirks, but she also has such grace to her. She’s also powerful and strong in her opinion and choices.
I just love reading books with strong female characters and I think Scarlett and her sister showcase that feature. The other characters are all just as entertaining and enjoyable to read. They each have strengths and weaknesses that seep jump through the pages.
Caraval never kept me in one direction and I loved that. There are so many twists, turns, betrayals and sabotages. But, there is also love and lust. I never once could figure out where the book was taking me, which is very refreshing!
I love that this book leaves me with wanting a sequel. But, it also wraps everything up nicely.
I can’t wait to read Legendary when it releases next year. I definitely know it will be on my list of most anticipated reads!
If you’re looking for a fun and exciting book with a game aspect, definitely check Caraval out. It’s a wonderful book full of magic, suspense and mischief! I highly, highly recommend it!
