Two years after a deadly plane crash, best friends D and Spider head into the mountains to face their grief. A gripping psychological thriller for fans of The Cheerleaders and Sadie.
D and Spider have always been close friends, and they are further united in their shared heartbreak: they both lost siblings in a horrific plane crash two years earlier. A chance sighting of a beloved cuddly toy in a photograph of the only survivor spurs D to finally seek closure. She and Spider and their friend, Min, set off on a road trip to the mountainside site of that terrible crash.
Ariel has lived on the mountain all her life. She and her extended family are looked down upon by neighboring townsfolk and she has learned to live by her wits, trusting few people outside of her isolated, survivalist community. A terrifying attack sends her down the mountain for help; on her way, she comes upon the three girls – a chance encounter that will have far-reaching consequences for them all.
Review
Jo Treggiari certainly excels in creating suspenseful thrillers. I really enjoyed her previous book, Blood Will Out, and this one is no different.
The Grey Sisters follows D and Spider. They’re both navigating the loss of siblings after a terrible and unexpected plane crash. D, Spider and their friend Min decide to go on a road trip to seek answers to the crash and gain some closure. While on this trip, they meet Ariel – a girl who lives on the mountainside.
I enjoyed the characters in this book. Spider and D are different from one another. But their shared experiences brings them together. I have to say that Ariel really pulled me into this story. She’s strong and a total fighter. I completely admire her.
The plot of this book is really intense. And to be honest, I find it difficult to talk about the overall plot without revealing too much. I feel that at the core, The Grey Sisters is about family and about sisterhood.
There are twists, turns and a number of suspenseful moments in this book. These are all aspects I look for when I do read a thriller (which is a bit rare) and I have to admit this book really has them all.
Overall, I definitely recommend checking out this book. Jo Treggiari writes really eerie and suspenseful thrillers. Plus, it’s just been shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award for Young People’s Literature! So definitely check this book out.
