I’m so excited to be joining in on the Birthday blog tour along with Raincoast Books!
Today, I’ll be sharing my full thoughts on the book!
The publisher kindly sent me a physical copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Boyhood meets The Sun Is Also a Star in this unconventional love story about two teens bonded for life when they are born on the same day at the same time by award-winning author Meredith Russo!
Two kids, Morgan and Eric, are bonded for life after being born on the same day at the same time. We meet them once a year on their shared birthday as they grow and change: as Eric figures out who he is and how he fits into the world, and as Morgan makes the difficult choice to live as her true self. Over the years, they will drift apart, come together, fight, make up, and break up — and ultimately, realize how inextricably they are a part of each other.
Birthday Review
Birthday is one of my most anticipated reads. It’s an absolutely wonderful and beautiful book. It’s a book full of raw emotion and will certainly stick with me for a long time.
Birthday follows Morgan and Eric, two friends born on the same day who have been best friends ever since. The book follows their shared birthdays between the ages of 13 and 18 as they go through emotional changes and try to find themselves.
These characters certainly tug at my heartstrings. Morgan is such a sweet character but his story is heartwrenching. Morgan struggles with finding happiness and part of that is becoming the person he truly wants to be.
Morgan’s constant is Eric and I absolutely adore their relationship with one another. Their connection is certainly undeniable as they are there for each other throughout all of life’s twists and turns.
The writing is really great. Meredith Russo writes with such power and raw emotion that really makes the reader feel throughout the book. Her writing will definitely have you turning the page because I read this almost in one sitting!
Birthday is full of the diversity that readers desperately want to see more of in young adult books. I’m so happy that things are changing in the publishing world to achieve this. Birthday is certainly one of those books everyone should read. To help gain perspective, to understand people’s emotions and struggles. Birthday is a breathtaking and heart-wrenching story that brings a lot of perspective into the world.
Overall, I highly recommend picking up Birthday. I guarantee that it will make you smile and cry, but it will be so worth it. While this is my first Meredith Russo book, I’m looking forward to reading more in the future!
