Eighteen-year-old chauffeur’s daughter Jane Marlow grew up among the domestic staff of a wealthy LA rock producer, within reach of bands she idolizes, but never a VIP. Every summer, Jane and her father head to the Sierras to work at the producer’s luxury lodge at Lake Condor—a resort town and the site of a major musical festival.
The legendary family who runs the festival are the Sarafians, and Jane’s had a longtime crush on their oldest son, Eddie—doltish but sweet. So when a long-distance romance finally sparks between them, she doesn’t hesitate to cross class lines.
But Jane’s feelings about Eddie are thrown into question after she returns to the lake and reconnects with his alluringly intense brother, the dark horse of her placid summer plans. A fellow lover of music—and hater of the game—Fen Sarafian has been ousted from the family and is slumming it at a vinyl record shop. He burns for Jane like a house on fire and will do anything to sabotage his older brother, even if it means taking a wrecking ball to a multi-million-dollar music festival. Or Jane’s heart.
A chauffer’s daughter finds herself in the middle of a love triangle with the sons of her boss’s wealthy next-door neighbors in this delightfully romantic story from the author of Alex, Approximately, Jenn Bennett.
Always Jane Review
I’ve always been a fan of Jenn Bennett’s books. She’s an auto-buy author for me and Starry Eyes is still one of my all time favourite books. Her newest release is a sweet and charming read, that’s perfect for summer.
Always Jane follows Jane, a chaffeur’s daughter who works for a famous LA rock producer. While spending the summer in the Sierra’s for a music festival, she experiences new friendships and new love.
Jane is a good main character. Jenn Bennett always does a wonderful job at creating characters that draw the reader in. While she’s struggling with aphasia, she shows persistence and bravery. She’s just an all around great character.
I love that this book takes place over the course of a summer — it makes for a fun reading experience. The side characters in the book are entertaining and definitely add to the overall story. There’s also a little bit of mystery to the book which is a fun element.
What normally draws me into a Jenn Bennett book is the romance. It’s swoony and heartwarming. Unfortunately, I think the romance falls flat in this book. The love triangle just really doesn’t work. I also just feel like the connection between Jane and Fen isn’t as compelling as it is with Jenn’s other couples.
Overall, Always Jane is not my favourite Jenn Bennett. If it’s your first time reading her books I would highly suggest Alex, Approximately and Starry Eyes.
That being said, it’s still a lighthearted read that’s perfect for the summer months. It has great writing and an enjoyable story that works for when you just want something quick and easy to read.
