Serpent and Dove by Shelby Mahurin - The Contented ReaderBound as one to love, honor, or burn.

Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned.

Sworn to the Church as a Chasseur, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. His path was never meant to cross with Lou’s, but a wicked stunt forces them into an impossible union—holy matrimony.

The war between witches and Church is an ancient one, and Lou’s most dangerous enemies bring a fate worse than fire. Unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, a choice must be made.

And love makes fools of us all.

Wow. This book. This book is just such a good debut. I first heard about this book at the Frenzy Presents event in August. I immediately pre-ordered the book and I’m so, so glad I did!

Serpent & Dove follows Lou, a witch hiding from her coven and the town’s witch hunters – The Chasseurs. It also follows Reid, a witch hunter who hunts and kills witches, with no questions asked. A series of events brings these two together, and chaos ensues!

First of all, these characters are just something else. I absolutely love Lou. And honestly, she’s one of my favourite characters ever. She’s incredibly sassy and opinionated and doesn’t take no for an answer. She protects herself at all costs, and its interesting to watch.

I absolutely adore Reid – but let me explain why. He’s a witch hunter whose only goal is to act fast, think later. His character arc in this book is exceptional. He battles himself and others, but ultimately becomes his true self. We see him gripping with the fact that what he knows may not be true.

The banter between these two characters is so great, and had me constantly turning the page. But honestly, Lou’s interactions with every character in this book is the best. Coco is fantastic and my heart just adores Ansel.

The overall plot of this book is really enjoyable. It’s a great pace and everything unfolds in a realistic way. And I adore the French setting. It is hard to believe at times that this is a debut novel. There are twists and turns in this book that definitely leave me wanting more – and I can’t wait for book two!

Overall, I think Serpent & Dove is fantastic. It’s somewhat comparable to Sarah J Maas – particularly because of its sassy and independent main character. But in the end, it’s just a fantastic book, with a great storyline.

I highly recommend checking Serpent & Dove out if you haven’t already! I mean, it has witches and sizzling chemistry and romance. Who doesn’t want more of that?

Love makes fools of us all, darling.

About The Author

Shelby Mahurin Author Photo - The Contented ReaderShelby Mahurin grew up on a small farm in rural Indiana, where sticks became wands and cows became dragons. Her rampant imagination didn’t fade with age, so she continues to play make-believe every day—with words now instead of cows. When not writing, Shelby watches the Office and obsesses over her Twitter feed. She still lives near that childhood farm with her very tall husband, semi-feral toddlers, two dogs, and one cat.

I loved this book. Such a good October read with all the witches and stuff. Plus, the juicy romance leaves you on the edge of your seat wanting more. It is such a page turner with every chapter leaving you with just the smallest urge to continue reading even when it 5 o’clock in the morning and you have to get up early. I can’t wait for a sequel. Nice review by the way; very straight forward and very little redundancy 😉
