Boyhood meets The Sun Is Also a Star in this unconventional love story about two teens bonded for life when they are born on the same day at the same time by award-winning author Meredith Russo!
Two kids, Morgan and Eric, are bonded for life after being born on the same day at the same time. We meet them once a year on their shared birthday as they grow and change: as Eric figures out who he is and how he fits into the world, and as Morgan makes the difficult choice to live as her true self. Over the years, they will drift apart, come together, fight, make up, and break up—and ultimately, realize how inextricably they are a part of each other.
This book is absolutely wonderful and beautiful and one of my most anticipated reads. It’s a book full of raw emotion and certainly will stick with me for a long time!
Birthday follows two friends, Morgan and Eric who were born on the same day and have been best friends ever since. The book follows them through their shared birthdays, from age 13 to age 18. They each go through emotional changes and struggle to find themselves.
I absolutely adored this book, and I truly do not know how to put my love of this book into words. These characters totally tugged at my heartstrings, the whole way through. Morgan is an absolute sweetheart but he also has a really difficult life because he struggles with loss and finding his inner self. His constant is Eric and I absolutely adore their relationship with one another. It’s a connection that is undeniable and through life’s twists and turns (from 13-18) they clearly are there for one another. The ending is an absolute joy and it really shows the power of self-discovery and living as your authentic self.
The writing in this book is truly magnificent. Russo writes with such power and raw emotion, that ultimately makes the reader feel intense emotions throughout the book. Her writing will definitely have you turning the page, because I read this in practically one sitting!
This book is full of the diversity that we desperately want to see more of in young adult books. I am so happy that things are changing in the publishing world to achieve this. This is a book that everyone should read – to gain perspective, to understand other people’s emotions or even your own emotions. Birthday is a breathtaking and heart-wrenching story that will definitely stick with me for a long time.
I HIGHLY recommend picking this book up. I guarantee that it will make you smile and make you cry, but it will be so worth it. While this is my first Meredith Russo book, I can’t wait to read more of her books in the future.
