This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do. This afternoon, her planet was invaded.
The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.
But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it’s clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again.
BRIEFING NOTE: Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.
I am TOTALLY late to the game in reading this book. I have heard such amazing things about The Illuminae Files for such a long time. But, science fiction books are never my first choice of books to go for, so it took me a while to get in the mood to read it. This is such an epic book and I’m so glad I’ve finally read it!
I absolutely adore these characters. Kady is such a badass female character. She’s sassy and intelligent and doesn’t take no for an answer. Also, I think she’s incredibly strong, and I loved her character arc throughout the length of the book. I totally love Ezra as well – and I thoroughly enjoyed the conversations between him and Kady.
And honestly, what kind of review would this be without a comment on AIDAN. Ummm … wow! What a creepy and insane AI. But, I seriously loved every second of it. AIDAN is so weird and yet kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Dare I say, he’s the best part about this book?
Illuminae is totally a story full of action! And, the unique way of telling it is amazing. Originally, I was unsure if I would enjoy the mixed media format, but honestly, I loved it! It’s such a fun and entertaining way to read this story.
If you’re crazy like me, and haven’t jumped on the Illuminae bandwagon yet, I highly recommend doing so! The lovely Kaleena recommended reading the book alongside the audiobook, and it was such an enjoyable experience. Shoutout to her for the recommendation!
