Thomas Wildus and the Book of Sorrows by J.M Bergen - The Contented ReaderThomas thinks he’s an ordinary twelve year old, but when a strange little man with gold-flecked eyes gives him an ancient text called The Book of Sorrows, the world he knows is turned upside down. Suddenly he’s faced with a secret family legacy, powers he can hardly begin to understand, and an enemy bent on destroying everything he holds dear. The more he reads and discovers, the deeper the danger to himself and the people he loves. As the race to the final showdown unfolds, Thomas must turn to trusted friends and uncertain allies as he seeks to prevent destruction at an epic scale.

This book is such a fun middle grade fantasy that totally gives me modern day Harry Potter vibes. As a teacher, I love finding new middle grade books that I can recommend to students. I think a lot of kids who love fantasy will enjoy this book.

Thomas Wildus and the Book of Sorrows follows twelve-year old Thomas. He enters a book shop after kung fu practice and the store’s owner introduces him to the Book of Sorrows. A story full of magic, action and adventure follows that middle grade kids are going to love. I mean, everyone loves magic, action and adventure, right?

I really enjoyed Thomas as a main character. He’s just such a likeable kid and I think a lot of middle graders who read this book will relate to him. I’m really excited to see his character develop more as the series continues. Supporting characters are just as enjoyable!

The storyline is so fun. It’s full of magic and adventure. There are surprising twists and turns that keep its reader wanting more. It has a great pace that left me constantly turning the page. Bergen’s writing style is really enjoyable and I really think that fans of Harry Potter and the Percy Jackson series will love it.

Overall, Thomas Wildus and the Book of Sorrows is a wonderful entry in a new middle grade series. It’s fun of action and adventure that readers will enjoy. I can’t wait to see how things move forward in book two!

No matter what happens, always remember magic is real.

About The Author

J.M Bergen Author Photo - The Contented ReaderWhen J.M. isn’t working on the Thomas Wildus books, you can find him playing with his kids, napping, or dreaming up new adventures. If you ever meet him and can’t think of anything to talk about, you might ask about Herman the Shark, the Kai and Eli stories, or why Riddle-Master by Patricia McKillip is his all-time favorite book. Or maybe, just maybe, you’ll have questions and stories of your own (if you do, he’ll think that’s far more interesting).
