King's Cage by Victoria Aveyard - The Contented ReaderWhen the Lightning Girl’s spark is gone, who will light the way for the rebellion?

Mare Barrow is a prisoner, powerless without her lightning, tormented by her lethal mistakes. She lives at the mercy of a boy she once loved, a boy made of lies and betrayal. Now a king, Maven Calore continues weaving his dead mother’s web in an attempt to maintain control over his country—and his prisoner.

As Mare bears the weight of Silent Stone in the palace, her once-ragtag band of newbloods and Reds continue organizing, training, and expanding. They prepare for war, no longer able to linger in the shadows. And Cal, the exiled prince with his own claim on Mare’s heart, will stop at nothing to bring her back.

When blood turns on blood, and ability on ability, there may be no one left to put out the fire—leaving Norta as Mare knows it to burn all the way down.

Review

King’s Cage is a great addition to the Red Queen series. Like it’s title suggests, Mare Barrow is definitely contained in the King’s Cage. Surprisingly, I really love this book.

I’ve been very vocal about thinking that the first book is a mash between The Hunger Games and Divergent. But as the series has continued, Victoria Aveyard has made it her own. And, it definitely does impress me!

King’s Cage picks up after the events of Glass Sword. Without giving away too much – Mare is a prisoner of Maven’s. There’s more political desire, fighting and training. And a lot is set up for the final book.

This story is definitely my favourite so far of the bunch. Maven gets crueler … is that even possible? And, is it possible that I actually kind of like him at times? I mean, he’s so mean and cruel. Yet he tugs at my heartstrings?

Mare’s bravery and strength shines in this book. Cal … well he’s basically the same as always! There’s more epic battles and intense political discussions. And these are all things that Aveyard does SO well!

Aveyard’s writing is wonderful. She’s so descriptive and creates visually stunning settings that leap of the page with the written word. I find myself drawn to what is going to happen next, purely because of her words. She certainly knows how to captivate her reader.

I am super excited to see how everything concludes in War Storm. While I didn’t get to reading it in 2018, I’m hoping to get to it soon! I hope it will be as epic as I’ve made it up to be in my head!

I've been broken too many times to break again.
