Halloween is such a fun time. There are so many fun activities to do and obviously, kids love the holiday! Halloween is one of my favourite experiences as a teacher and I love sharing reading with them, especially around different holidays. It shows them that reading can be fun, and Halloween books definitely help to show this!

So, I’ve decided to share five of my favourite halloween books that are perfect for kids. I’ve also added two extras at the bottom, that are perfect for sharing where you live along with Halloween with your kids!

Halloween Books Perfect for Kids

Big Pumpkin by Erica Silverman - The Contented Reader
Big Pumpkin is a perfect book for kids. It gets them in the spirit of Halloween and they always giggle while reading this one. I’ve also used this book in the classroom for a language assessment and had the students retell the story. It’s a fun and engaging story and in my experience, kids definitely enjoy it!

The Berenstain Bears in the Spooky Fun House - The Contented Reader

This one is definitely an oldie, but a goodie! The copy I own is actually one from my own childhood. Kids LOVE pop-up books and this one is no exception. It’s a great story and kids love the pop up aspect. Alternatively, another great Halloween Berenstain Bears book is Trick or Treat! Either way, these Halloween books are sure to bring a smile to your child’s face!

The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin - The Contented Reader
I was introduced to this book early in my teaching placement. I quickly fell in love with it. It’s such a cute Halloween/Fall book that kids adore. As a teacher, I love it because there are so many teaching moments within it. It’s about accepting yourself and not judging others. It’s also a perfect alternative for parents who don’t want a ‘scary’ Halloween book. This one is certainly one of the cutest Holiday children’s book I’ve seen!

Franklin's Halloween - The Contented Reader
How can I not mention Franklin in this list? Franklin is such a classic series for kids and this Halloween book is lots of fun. It follows Franklin and his friends as they dress up for Halloween and trick-or-treat! This is a perfect family friendly book that your child will definitely love!

The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything - The Contented Reader
This is another blast from my past! I remember my Mom reading me this book around Halloween when I was a kid, and I always loved it. This is another one where the copy I own is actually the one from my childhood. It’s such a fun read and is sure to make kids laugh. I’ve definitely gotten lots of laughs from my students!

Bonus Books!

Those are five of my favourite Halloween books for kids! But, I also have two other favourites, that I have to mention! So consider these ones as bonus favourites. These ones are particularly great for all of my fellow Canadians.

The Spooky Express Canada - The Contented reader
I love this book so much. I found it while browsing my local Chapters store and knew I had to get it! I brought it to my classroom the next day and read it to the students – they LOVED it! This book is so fun because it combines a holiday that kids love, with learning about their country! The best part about this book: it’s a series, so you’re bound to find one for your own country or state!

This is another one I found while browsing my local Chapters store! This is a fun Halloween story about a boy experiencing Halloween night in Toronto. It’s great for kid’s to read books that talk about places close to home – I think in my experience, it makes them happy that they know all about it! Once again, this is a series, so definitely check to see if there is one available for your country or state!

Well, friends! Those are some fun Halloween books that are perfect for your family and your children for Halloween! They’re also great for the classroom for my fellow teachers!

I hope everyone has a happy and safe Halloween in a few days!
