Caraval by Stephanie Garber - The Contented ReaderRemember, it’s only a game…

Scarlett Dragna has never left the tiny island where she and her sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval—the faraway, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show—are over.

But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt-of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.

Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. Nevertheless she becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic. And whether Caraval is real or not, Scarlett must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over or a dangerous domino effect of consequences will be set off, and her beloved sister will disappear forever.

Welcome, welcome to Caraval…beware of getting swept too far away.

Caraval is such a fantastic book and honestly, I’m struggling to collect all my thoughts! It’s such an amazing book.

This book is wonderful, marvellous, and intriguing. It is magical and suspenseful and filled with mischief. I just love Garber’s writing – it’s surprising it’s a debut novel!

This book never kept me in one direction and I loved that. There are so many twists and turns, betrayals and sabotages as well as love and lust.  I never once knew where the book was taking me and I found it such a refreshing change from most books I have read before. I love that the book ends leaving me with wanting a sequel. But it also wraps everything up really nicely!

I loved Scarlett. She is such an interesting main character and heroine. She has flaws and quirks but also such grace and dignity to her. But, she’s also powerful and strong in her opinions and choices. I love reading books where I find there to be a strong female lead. The other characters were all just as entertaining and enjoyable to read. They each had strengths and weaknesses that seeped through the pages.

I can’t wait to read the sequel, Legendary, when it releases next year! You can bet it will be on my most anticipated reads list! I highly recommend this book to everyone! It’s a new and refreshing read that is totally fun! I hope that the next book will have as many games, because I’m a sucker for it!

Every person has the power to change their fate if they are brave enough to fight for what they desire more than anything.
