Dear Reader,
If you have picked up this book with the hope of finding a simple and cheery tale, I’m afraid you have picked up the wrong book altogether. The story may seem cheery at first, when the Baudelaire children spend time in the company of some interesting reptiles and a giddy uncle, but don’t be fooled. If you know anything at all about the unlucky Baudelaire children, you already know that even pleasant events lead down the same road to misery.
In fact, within the pages you now hold in your hands, the three siblings endure a car accident, a terrible odor, a deadly serpent, a long knife, a large brass reading lamp, and the appearance of a person they’d hoped never to see again.
I am bound to record these tragic events, but you are free to put this book back on the shelf and seek something lighter.
With all due respect,
Lemony Snicket
The Reptile Room Review
After reading The Bad Beginning, I’ve been so excited to continue with the series. It’s been so fun re-visiting one of my favourite childhood books again!
The Reptile Room is one of my favourites in the Series of Unfortunate Events. I was curious to see if I enjoyed it as much as I did when I was younger and I’m happy to say, I totally did!
The Reptile Room follows the Baudelaire children following the events of the first book. They’re sent to live with their “Uncle” Monty and the hysterics continue once Count Olaf finds them!
The Baudelaire chilren are just as fun in this sequel! But I think that the plot of this book makes them even more enjoyable. We get to see more of their personality, which is really drawn out because of Monty.
Speaking of Monty, he’s just a fantastic character. It’s honestly so funny that his name is Montgomery Montgomery!
He’s always been one of my favourite characters in this series. He’s jovial, adventurous and accepts the Baudelaires, with no questions asked. But, he’s also incredibly naive, which is a huge part of this book.
The plot of The Reptile Room is more fast-paced and definitely stands the test of time. I enjoyed it more than the first book and loved it as much as I did the first time.
Overall, The Reptile Room is a solid addition to the series. It’s engaging and fuels a big desire to continue with the series.
If you’re looking for books to introduce to your young readers, this is certainly a great option!
